How to: Ace your next Interview in Beauty

There’s nothing more exciting than interviewing for your dream job in beauty. Take a peek at our top tips for nailing your next interview and securing your next job in the beauty industry.

Dress to impress!

First impressions are everything, and part of that is your attire, hair and makeup. A non-branded beauty uniform is a great choice, but if you don’t have one, don’t stress. Go for something professional and polished. For example, dress pants with a nice top and ballet flats.

Always have your hair tied neatly back in a bun (if possible) - this is the classic hairstyle expected in most beauty positions, and it will allow your interviewer to picture you working in their business.

For your makeup, you should go for a clean natural look. Think mineral foundation, blush/bronzer, mascara and lipgloss. The day of your interview isn’t the right day to test out a new makeup look - trust us. You want to feel confident and look your best.

Do your research!

The best thing you can do is research the beauty business, role and industry in preparation for your interview. You can find this information by visiting their website, reading about their values and services, and checking out their LinkedIn page. You’ll be able to relay what you’ve learnt in the interview as part of why you want to work with their team.

Preparation is key!

Use these commonly asked questions to practice with a friend or family member. Ask them to roleplay an interview with you and give you feedback on your answers.

  • Tell us about yourself.
  • Tell us about your experience within the beauty industry.
  • What makes you passionate about the beauty industry?
  • Have you ever worked with KPIs? Tell us about your experience.
  • Do you enjoy working in a team?
  • What are your strengths?
  • What are your weaknesses?
  • Why do you want to work with us?
  • Tell us about a time you overcame a stressful situation at work.
  • Roleplay how you would make a retail sale.

Top tip! Try to avoid using overused, commonly known answers to questions. Showing your personality and thinking outside the box will make you more memorable and genuine. Where possible, use real-life examples to back up what you’re saying.

Showcase your passion for beauty

Pick a treatment the beauty business offers that you love or would love to learn, and tell the interviewer why you’re so passionate about it. This is a great time to share a story about your previous training or an outstanding client experience.

Start to think about what position you would like to see yourself in, in 5 years. This will show your potential employer that you’re goal orientated, motivated and excited to continue learning.

Ask questions!

At the end of your interview, your potential employer will usually allow you to ask them questions. Always say yes and have some questions prepared. This is an excellent opportunity to give your interviewer confidence that you’re the right fit for the role and make sure they’re the right fit for you.

Here are some questions we recommend asking.

  • Do you have any hesitations about my experience or ability to succeed in this role?
  • How do you measure success in this role?
  • Will there be opportunities for career development?
  • What is the company culture like?

Remember, above all else, the goal is to showcase why you will be an asset to the team and your passion for the beauty industry. First impressions are everything, so walk in with a smile and have confidence knowing you’re prepared to nail the interview.

These simple tips will help you stand out from the crowd at your next interview and hopefully secure your dream job in beauty!
