Dermal Roller Vs Dermal Pen - What’s The Difference?

Let’s face it, most of us want to look good.   And… when you get to my age you most probably want to look younger as well.  The great news is that, when it comes to looking after our skin we now have a plethora of anti-aging and skin correction treatments that offer quick results with minimal downtime.  We no longer have to resort to risky and invasive procedures such as laser skin resurfacing and surgical face-lifts to get results.

These days, the emphasis is on treatments that will improve the look and quality of your skin by stimulating and supporting it’s natural function rather than the torturous, old-school methods of burning, cutting and pasting it into shape.

The bad news is that; now, with so many different treatment options to choose from, how do you know which one is for you?

When it comes to skin, I’m a big believer in starting early.  The skin is alive!  It’s been growing, shedding and changing since the day you were born.  And while I’m not suggesting that your 10 year old self should have been in the bathroom diving into your mum’s jar of Pond’s Cream instead of hiding in the wardrobe test-driving your dad’s razor on your legs (cough, cough… wasn’t me!), I am suggesting that prevention is far better than cure.

Adopting a skin management treatment that will keep your skin functioning at peak performance early on is vital if you want healthy, younger looking skin down the track.   Did you know that collagen production in your skin starts to decline at around 20 years of age?  That’s pretty young right?

Well, one skin treatment that has been making waves in recent years is skin-needling and it’s rise in popularity is not without good reason.  That’s because, skin-needling is a type of collagen induction therapy that actually stimulates new collagen to grow within the skin, not only helping the skin stay firm, smooth and plump but also improving the appearance of issues such as pigmentation, acne scarring, broken capillaries and even some types of stretch-marks and surgical scars.  Not only that, skin-needling also amplifies the effects of our topical skin care by allowing for better penetration of our serums and moisturisers so that the active ingredients can reach the skin at a level where they are most needed.

One way to incorporate skin-needling into your beauty routine is from the comfort of your own home using a ‘Dermal Roller’.  Cost effective and easy to use, this hand-held tool makes it simple to benefit from the effects of skin-needling.  Simply roll it over your face and neck once or twice a week to keep your skin looking fresh and boost your skincare.  You can read more about how skin-needling works and why using a Dermal Roller may be the best thing you’ve ever done for your skin here.  The other way to incorporate skin-needling is by visiting your skin therapist in-clinic for a ‘Dermal Pen’ treatment.

Unlike the Dermal Roller, the Dermal Pen is a motorised, hand-held device that should only be used by an experienced skin therapist.  That’s because with a Dermal Pen the needle length can be adjusted to work on the deeper layers of the skin allowing the treatment to be customised to address individual areas of concern such as deeper wrinkles and scarring and can even be used on the scalp for stimulating hair growth.

Having your skin-needling performed in-clinic also means that you can choose to further enhance the results by combining it with treatments such as Hyaluronic Acid and Peptide masks, LED Light Therapy or infusions of rich plasma taken from your own blood (aka - Vampire Facial) with results famously posted on social media by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian-West and model, Bar Refaeli.

In-clinic Dermal Pen treatments are recommended every 6-8 weeks with a minimum of 3 treatments to start the initial collagen boost process.  Combine this with your at-home Dermal Roller treatment to maintain results and give your skincare a boost, and you’ll have a dream skin that not only looks beautiful but is strong and healthy too!
